Carte Nouvelle de l’Amerique Angloise contenant tout ce que les Anglois possedent sur le Continent de l”Amerique Septentrionale…

By: Matthieus Albrecht Lotter

Date: 1776 Augsburg

Dimensions: 23.5 x 19.5 inches (60 cm x 50 cm)

This important copper engraved map with period hand colouring shows us the British Colonies at the start of the Revolutionary War.

Lotter was a leading German mapmaker who intended this map for the French market as is indicated by his use of French for the text in the title cartouche, the names of the colonies themselves, and all other topographical features. He punctuates his loyalties by limiting the claims of the British government to the regions east of the Appalachian Mountains. Though some are strangely shaped to the modern eye, the colonies in general are described by Lotter with some precision. The Great Lakes are in place, and cities, towns and settlements are named. A variety of indigenous Indian tribes are named in the territories they still occupied.

While the title given here is abbreviated, within the title cartouche Lotter elaborates the topic of his map, describing the territories contained by name, including America, Canada and the colonies, thus resulting in an unusually large cartouche which is surmounted by the British Royal arms.

Condition: This map is in B+ condition with minor soiling around the edges. A minor tear in the body of the map has been repaired with archival material on the verso.
