Date: 1948, France

Dimensions: 9.5 x 12 inches (24 x 30 cm)

This pictorial map of coastal New York and the tri-state area is a fine example of the work of Blondel la Rougery, a leading cartography company in twentieth century France. Produced in 1948, Blondel la Rougery’s map is a wonderful example of pictorial cartography.

Showing two maps of the area, the map highlights important cities like Washington, Philadelphia, Stamford, and of course, New York. Around these maps are vignettes of America as a whole, containing imagery of a Sioux surrounded by bison; a Hollywood actress next to a film reel with a still of a cowboy on a horse; and the Capitol Building and White House. There are also portraits of Venetian explorer Sebastian Cabot, General Marquis de Lafayette, and George Washington. A view of the Manhattan skyline is also featured in the map.

The map is in full color with beautiful detail and finely produced illustrations. With its fascinating historical detail, this map by Blondel la Rougery is a beautiful example of mid-century mapmaking and pictorial cartography.

Condition: Map is in A condition with full margins and bright colors.
