This lovely hand colored map provides a bird’s eye view of Mexico City at a time when it was still in the middle of a lake, completely surrounded by water.
The engraving comes from the first English language edition of The History Of The Conquest Of Mexico By The Spaniards, Translated from the Original Spanish of Don Antonio De Solis, Secretary and Historiographer to His Catholick majesty, which was translated by Thomas Townsend. The city and its immediate environs on the shores of the lake are shown in detail. The engraving bears strong resemblance to images of the city which became available in Europe shortly after the conquest of the city by Cortes in 1521, all based on Cortes’ original depiction, and is one of eight plates used as illustrations for the book
Condition: This map is in B+ condition. Professional repairs with archival material on the verso reinforce fold lines.
