Date: 1950 (published) San Francisco

Dimensions: 21.25 x 31.75 inches (54 x 80.5)

A trimmed example of a vibrant map of the Hawaiian Islands, published by the Hawaiian Pineapple Company in 1950. The image was made from an original painting by Joseph Feher commissioned by the company.

The map is filled with elements of imagery representing the natural flora and fauna of the islands as well as important moments and people in history including the arrival of Captain Cook and the iconic King Kamehameha. Pineapples are scattered throughout the island representing the abundance of plantations that produce and ship throughout the world. Other illustrations show recreational activities and scenes of native fishing practices.

The map should be accompanied by an extensive legend to the right but at some point is was trimmed very near the neatline. Below the original legend is a note that actually suggests cutting it free to be place on the back of a frame. Such action was likely taken with this example.

Condition: Map is in C condition, trimmed close to the neatline with multiple small holes and two larger ones (diameter less than a pencil eraser).
