General Chart shewing the track of H.M. Ships Hecla & Griper, from the Orkneys to Melville Island, North Georgia. S.F. 1819 and return in 1820

By: William Edward Parry

Date: 1821 (Published) London

Dimensions: 9.8 x 23.7 inches (24.9 x 60.2 cm)

This map is William Parry’s chart of his expedition in search of the Northwest Passage, undertaken in 1819. It depicts the Arctic from the Bering Strait to the Orkney and Faroe Islands. Shown is the route taken by Parry, his daily account of the expedition as it progressed in the open sea.

This expedition was one of the most important naval expeditions to the Arctic, with Parry being the first explorer to penetrate the Archipelago, opening a passage through which subsequent expeditions would follow. He proved that Lancaster Sound was penetrable toward the west, thus laying the groundwork for the mapping of the many islands through which the Passage would ultimately be traced.

Though he did not succeed in his quest he was the first European to deliberately winter above the Arctic Circle. Through his experience he pioneered and developed techniques for living in such harsh conditions, and developed innovate methods for providing protection against both the elements and illness.

Condition: This map is in B+ condition. Light soiling, darkening of one fold and minor restoration to fold separation.
