This is map presents a large format depiction of the St. Vincent and Barbados island. At the time of printing, both islands were under British control. Both maps show the location of various parishes, towns, forts, and bays. While the map of St. Vincent depicts the physical geography of the islands mountainous interior, the map of Barbados is show in contrast as a relatively flat island that has been populated with sugar cane plantations. Hundreds of family names fill the island of Barbados as it had been a primary supplier of sugar since the mid-1600s.

The map was published as part of John Thompson’s “A New General Atlas,” in 1817 out of Edinburgh, Scotland. The atlas acted as a continuation of Pinkerton’s Modern Atlas of 1815 as the resemblance between the two in quite noticeable. Thompson’s atlas adds about twenty maps not included in that of Pinkerton. Nearly half of these extra maps focus on the West India Islands.

Condition: The map is in A condition with some light soiling and foxing that does not distract from the image. The paper is strong without at holes or tears and the map is presented with ample margins for framing.
