Engraved after the Treaty of Paris in 1783, Thomas Bowen’s fine map of the United States in the post-Revolutionary War era is a landmark in the early cartography of the new nation. Depicting the eastern half of present-day America, southern Canada, and the Bahamas, Bowen’s map outlines the boundaries of the United States, Spain, France, and Great Britain in North America after the Revolutionary War.
It is as much a map of the boundaries of America as it is a detailed map of various Indigenous tribal lands. Listed among these are “Nation of the Bear” (located in present-day Manitoba) and “Mascoutens," or "Nation of the Fire” (located in present-day Illinois). Bowen’s map also contains descriptions of western lands such as “Country Full of Mines” around present-day Missouri and “Extensive Meadows Full of Buffalos” in present-day Nebraska.
It is also notable that though the map was published shortly after independence, and prior to the admission of Kentucky, Tennessee, and Vermont to the union, Vermont is named above “Hampshire.” This admission of Vermont on the map is actually in reference to the Vermont Republic, an independent state that existed from 1777 to 1791. Also of interest is the depiction of both East and West Florida.
Thomas Bowen had a keen eye for detail which can be seen in the sheer volume of towns, tribes, and geographical features like the “Nova Scotia Fishing Banks.” With bright color, a strong impression, and endless details, Thomas Bowen’s map is a beautiful example of early American mapping at a time of great historical interest.
Condition: This map is in B - condition with several small horizontal separations along the centerfold as well as some discoloration, most noticeably in the top and bottom margins. Overall, the map presents a strong impression and lovely color with ample margins for framing
