A rare antique print showing the Twelve Tribes of Israel encamped around the Tabernacle housing the Ark of the Covenant during their years of wandering in the wilderness. While the creator of the map is unknown, the work was published in A New History of the Holy Bible by Thomas Stackhouse, 1751.
The Tabernacle is finely drawn at the center, with smoke rising from one end of the roof. The camps are portrayed as being of strict symmetry and order with the tents arranged in concentric squares. The camps of each tribe fly pennants on which their symbol is displayed. Vignettes above the encampment are drawn and named for each tribe with each containing a unique image.
While each tribe has its own clearly-defined territory, the foreground is filled with activity in what appears to be an oasis. All work to provide basic necessities is depicted; sowing and reaping, animal husbandry, the sundry activities needed for sustenance of the tribes.
Condition: Map is in A condition, published folding, now flat with a narrow lower left margin. The impression is sharp and paper clean, without any significant tears
