This map by d;Anville is offered in two sheets that can be joined upon request. The northern sheet extends eastward from all of Turkey, across to the Gobi Desert, including the Black Sea, the Caspian Sea, Central Asia, and Xinjiang, including the Levant, Egypt, northern Arabia, Persia, the Persian Gulf, the Indus River and Tibet, and Bengal. The southern sheet starts at the Red Sea, with much detail of the southern Arabian Peninsula, and across to the Indian Peninsula, from north of Gujarat across to the Ganges Delta, including Ceylon (Sri Lanka), the Laccadive and Maldive Islands. The blank region of southern Odisha is labeled, “Pays inconnu” (Unknown land).
The map features an elaborate title cartoche at bottom center depicting the religions of the world. At the top is a seated woman holding a cross in her right hand, and a book with seven seals in her left, with a flame of the holy spirit emitting from the top of her head and a harp at her feet. On her right, she leans on the Ark of the Covenant, against which rest the tablets of the Ten Commandments and the crown of the high priest of the Temple in Jerusalem. A censor is off to her right. On the left side of the cartouche is a man in a turban at a fire altar worshipping with a book open to a picture of the sun. On the right of the cartouche is a woman holding a censor worshipping an idol resembling a Buddha.
Condition: This map is in very fine condition with paper added around the edges of sheets, likely during the 18th century, to fit in a custom binding (with handwritten page numbers in ink, 115 and 116). Delicate outline color appears to be contemporaneous with the map, but that is debatable. Impression is dark on clean paper and margins are full on all sides.
