1606 / 1613 India Orientalis
By: Jodocus Hondius
Date: 1606 / 1613 (published) Amsterdam
Dimensions: 16.5 x 20.5 inches (42 x 52 cm)
This elegant map by Hondius depicts India, Southeast Asia, China (south of Fujian), and the Philippines, as well as Ceylon (Sri Lanka), the Maldives, Andamans, northern Sumatra, and northern Borneo.
Seaport towns are most densely noted along the coasts of India. The Singapore Strait appears to be misunderstood as a narrow channel cutting through the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula. Several false lakes are included in Chinae and India Extra Gangem. This fantastic work is embellished with two strap-work cartouches, a decorative distance scale, and vignettes of an oriental junk, a European sailing vessel and a ferocious sea monster in the Bay of Bengal.
Latin text on the verso, pages 337-338.
Condition: Map is in very good condition with full margins and superb hand coloring. Top left corner has chipped off with no loss near the image or text.
