DESCRIPTION

This lively hand-colored aquatint view of Broadway in New York, drawn by Thomas Hornor, aquatinted by John Hill, and published in 1836 by Joseph Stanley & Co., presents one of the city’s principal thoroughfares during a formative period of growth. The scene looks northward from the vicinity of Canal Street toward City Hall Park, showing a continuous row of buildings rendered with careful attention to architectural detail, signage, and commercial activity.

A Bustling Commercial Thoroughfare

Broadway is shown crowded with horse-drawn carriages, omnibuses, and pedestrians, reflecting its role as a major artery of movement and commerce. Shopfronts line the street, their signs advertising a wide range of goods and services, while figures gather along the sidewalks and at building entrances. The composition emphasizes both the density of traffic and the variety of daily life, from merchants and customers to laborers and passersby.

The buildings themselves are individually depicted, aligning with the print’s stated aim of showing each structure along the route. This creates a visual record of the street’s commercial landscape, where businesses such as apothecaries, stationers, and general stores contributed to Broadway’s reputation as a center of trade and activity.

New York in a Period of Expansion

Issued during a period when New York was emerging as the nation’s leading city, the print reflects the transformation of Broadway into a major urban corridor. The presence of organized street traffic, expanding commercial blocks, and increasing pedestrian activity signals a shift toward a more modern, interconnected city. The print captures a formative moment in New York’s development, preserving the character of Broadway before the advent of skyscrapers and electric transit, when the rhythm of the city was still defined by horse-drawn movement and street-level commerce.
