This is an authentic antique map of the state of Oregon by the Surveyor General’s Office. The map is dated August 16, 1861.
This early map of the newly formed state of Oregon shows the beginning stages of surveying and dividing the state into counties. Parallels are noted along the coast and a “proposed guide meridian,” bisects the state east of the Willamette Meridian. An indian reservation is shown running the length of the coast just north of the 4th standard parallel.
While a fair amount of detail is show with regard to the physical geography of the mountain ranges and various peaks, there is still much to be explored, especially in the south central and southeastern portions of the state. Just above the Columbia River that divides Oregon and the Washington Territory is an explanation of symbols, most of which refer to the status of surveyed townships.
Condition: Map is in B+ condition, originally issued folding, now flattened. Minor separations along the margin and where a few folds meet do not distract from the image.
