1591 Noah's Ark
DESCRIPTION
By: Theodore de Bry
Date: 1591 (circa) Frankfurt
Dimensions: 12.5 x 9 inches (32x 23 cm)
This engraving by Theodore de Bry depicts the landing of Noah’s Ark. The text mentions both Virginia and Florida, and the scene is interpreted as being purposely placed in Florida with the author suggesting that the indigenous peoples there were in fact descendants of Noah, and more specifically of Noah’s son Ham due to their dark skin.
The animals are shown descending in pairs from a steep hill or mountain and include elephants, camels, horses, oxen, etc. Theodor de Bry based his engravings on the watercolor illustrations done by Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues, a member of the short-lived Huguenot colony founded in Florida in the mid-16th century.
Condition: Map is in B+ condition with one tear that just enters the image in the top left. Some light soiling and other very minor tears are apparent in the margins. The overall eye appeal is very fine and the coloring is lovely.
