1916 Little Miami Railroad Company stock certificates
DESCRIPTION
These original early twentieth century stock certificates were issued by the Little Miami Railroad Company, representing shares valued at fifty dollars each. One certificate (#25138) dated July 11, 1916 is for 100 shares and the other (#23662) dated March 21, 1911 is for 4 shares.
Printed in black and gray on security paper, the certificate features finely engraved borders and detailed railroad vignettes, including a steam locomotive scene and pastoral imagery reflecting rail travel in Ohio. The face is completed with manuscript entries, period signatures, countersignatures from Cincinnati, serial numbering, and multiple punch cancellations indicating later corporate or transfer actions.
The verso is filled with formal transfer language and handwritten assignments, names, dates, validation stamps, and punch holes documenting subsequent ownership changes and official processing.
Historical Context
By the 1910s, the Little Miami Railroad Company had long been absorbed into larger railroad systems, yet its stock certificates continued to circulate as financial instruments reflecting earlier railroad development in Ohio. Originally chartered in the 1830s, the Little Miami line was among the earliest railroads in the state, helping to connect Cincinnati with inland markets and fostering regional commerce.
