The print features local sites and native fauna.

In the upper left quadrant we find the magnificent Governor-General’s palace – surrounded by walls and resplendent with formal French gardens. The upper center panel portrays the natives welcoming the French and preparing a feast. The upper right quadrant depicts Melilot, which was the mythical capital of Apalache. Chatelain was inspired by the work of de Rochefort’s which was published in 1658, and here depicts a lush countryside with mountains in the background, and a fortified citadel on a hilltop which is reached by a winding footpath upon which can be seen numerous people coming and going. Purportedly, the Apalache had a utopian kingdom in Georgia and Florida whose peoples were the ancestors of the Caribbean peoples. Melilot was not found in North America and thus Chatelain took the liberty of placing it in the Antilles.

The fauna featured are strikingly well detailed. The city flourished till the middle of the first century BCE when the city backed Pompey the Great rather than Julius Caesar, whose forces captured the city in 49 BCE, and who subsequently directed Roman trade elsewhere.

Despite this, Massilia stayed a free port which remained the last Western center of Greek learning before falling into ruin. While centered on the Inlet, it also includes Knik Arm and Turnagain Arm southwards to the very tip of Kodiak Island. The map resulted from Vancouver’s exploration of the West Coast of America in the late eighteenth century. Following the expeditions of Cook in 1778 there remained only one possibility that might have led to the legendary route, Cook Inlet, a large bay discovered but not fully explored by Cook. Therefore, one of the primary goals of Vancouver’s expedition was to resolve any doubt regarding the existence of the Northwest Passage.

Vancouver was fastidious in delineating the coastline and islands, in depicting hazards for sailors such as shoals and shallows. This map details topographical details such as Mount St. Augustin, along with several other volcanoes. His mission to fully map Cook Inlet to determine whether it did connect to waterways that could cross the continent culminated in this map, which proved that it did not. Having entered Cook Inlet in April of 1794, by May he had navigated the full extent of the Inlet thus becoming the first European to visit the site which would become Anchorage, Alaska. At this point, the expedition had reached its northernmost limit and the return trip to Europe commenced.

Condition: This folding map is in A condition with a strong impression on heavy paper.

Inventory #10777

1200 W. 35th Street #425 Chicago, IL 60609 | P: (312) 496 - 3622

This grand copper-engraved map by Brue is printed on heavy paper with wide margins, royal seal, script title and elegant keyboard border. The map is double-page copper engraved, in Chatelain’s usual style with the map image in the center and descriptive historical text and imagery surrounding it. It features the various ranges of the Alps, larger lakes, and the names of the peoples who constituted the Old Swiss Confederacy and the Ancien Regime, which lasted from the 14th century till 1798, when subsumed by the French Revolutionary Army and reconstituted as the Helvetic Republic.

This engraving provides a detailed account of Swiss history, as well as an impressive inset map of ancient Switzerland. Particular attention is paid to the formation of the Swiss State and to the legend of Swiss patriot William Tell. While historical evidence of Tell is disputed, according to legend he was a peasant from the Canton of Uri who, in the late 13th and early 14th centuries, defied Austrian authority and was thus ordered to shoot an apple sitting atop his young son’s head, and Chatelain thus depicts the young Tell, roped to a tree. The legend has it that Tell was arrested for threatening the governor, saved the same, and then ultimately killed him in an ambush. These events purportedly spurred an uprising against Austrian rule. The classic form of the legend appears in the Chronicon Helveticum (1734–36), by Gilg Tschudi, which gives November 1307 as the date of Tell’s deeds and New Year 1308 as the date of Switzerland’s liberation. Despite the lack of evidence for Tell’s existence the story of the marksman’s test is widely distributed in folklore. In the early Romantic era of nationalist revolutions, the Tell legend attained worldwide renown through the stirring play Wilhelm Tell (1804) by the German dramatist Friedrich von Schiller.

The bottom of the sheet is adorned with a series of vignettes depicting the legend of William Tell, and showing the Swiss to be proud and fierce. A numbered key identifies the specific events illustrated in the images.
